Lovastatin 10mg, 20mg Tablets are Dyslipidaemic Agents. It is an inactive lactone. Mevacor is the international brand name of this medicine. And in India, it is known by the brand name Aztatin.

 

Purpose:

  • Lovastatin 10mg, 20mg Tablets reduce the risk of fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction.
  • Improves survival by reducing cardiovascular deaths.
  • It is also used for the reduction of elevated total and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia.
  • Slows down the progressive course of atherosclerosis
  • Reduces the risk of total mortality, coronary heart disease death, recurrent coronary event, need for hospitalization and need for myocardial revascularization procedures.
  • Improves survival in cardiac transplant patients and reduces the risk of acute rejection in kidney transplant patients.

Mechanism:

This statin medicine lowers cholesterol in the blood. It blocks the working of an enzyme (HMG-CoA-reductase), which makes cholesterol in the body. This way the bad cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides are decreased, and good cholesterol (HDL) is increased in the body.

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The recommended dosage of Mevacor for effective results is 20 mg, once daily, taken during the evening.
  • The maximum recommended dosage for this medication is 80 mg per day.
  • Patients taking Amiodarone should only consume 40 mg per day.
  • Adolescents should consume between 10-20 mg per day, the dosage can be increased after 4 weeks.

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Aztatin are confusion and mild memory problems.
  • Worsening of diabetes in rare cases.
  • Serious side effects are dark urine, yellowing of the skin, severe abdominal pain, liver problems, tenderness, and muscle pain.
  • If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, consult your doctor right away before the situation worsens.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Lovastatin 10mg, 20mg Tablets should be taken either before sleeping or during the evening.
  • Before starting with the treatment, get your liver function checked.
  • If you have had a medical history of kidney disease, liver problems, or alcohol use, inform your doctor before starting with Aztatin.
  • It is absorbed by the lungs and body, and thus should not be taken during pregnancy, as it can harm the unborn baby.
  • Lactating mothers should take this medication only under the strict guidance of their doctor.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and proper exercise schedule during the tenure of this medication.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana as it can lead to extreme dizziness.
  • If you’re a type 2 diabetes patient, consume Aztatin tablets only if prescribed by the doctor.

Interactions:

Some medicines which can result in the complete removal of Lovastatin 10mg, 20mg Tablets from the body are Delavirdine, Ketoconazole, Cyclosporine, Erythromycin, Voriconazole, Telaprevir, Ritonavir, Warfarin, Daptomycin among others.
