Aztreonam 1gm, 2gm Injection is an antibiotic that is used to treat different bacterial infections. It belongs to the Monobactam class of drugs. In India and abroad, it is known by the name of Azactam and Cayston.

Purpose:

  • Azactam treats the symptoms of infections present in the skin, blood, stomach, urinary tract, female reproductive organs, and lungs.
  • It also treats Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, septicemia, peritonitis, endometritis, and pelvic cellulitis are cured by this injection.
  • It kills Gram-negative aerobic pathogens and abscesses.

 

Mechanism:

It is a synthetic bactericidal antibiotic which when injected into the body activates and prevents the entrance of bacteria from outside.

 

Dosage:

  • As directed by the physician/doctor.
  • At an initial stage, 2gm is recommended every 6-8 hours.
  • For effective results, Aztreonam 1gm, 2gm Injection should be continued at least for 48 hours, when the patient becomes asymptomatic.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Cayston are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, blurred vision, and headache.
  • Serious side effects are chest pain, abdominal pain, dark urine, seizures, confusion, easy bruising, yellowing of skin or eyes, unusual fatigue, and persistent signs of infection such as cold, cough, etc.
  • A very rare condition that can be shown and is dangerous is Clostridium Difficile.
  • Prolonged use of Aztreonam 1gm, 2gm Injection can result in vaginal yeast or fungal infection, oral thrush, or any other bacterial infection.
  • An allergic reaction to this drug is extremely rare. However, if any of the symptoms get worse, consult your doctor right away.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Limit your consumption of alcohol and marijuana.
  • During pregnancy, Azactam Injection should be used only if necessarily needed.
  • Do not freeze it.
  • Do not use it if it is an expired medication.
  • Original syringes should be protected from light.
  • The prefilled syringe is meant for use and throws purpose.
  • Do not twist or turn the cap of the syringe, rather snap it off.
  • Do not wipe the needle when not needed.
  • Use proper aseptic injection technique.
  • Live bacterial vaccines such as the typhoid vaccine might not be effective during the tenure of this medication.
  • It has been established that Aztreonam 1gm, 2gm Injection passes into breast milk. In small amounts, therefore consult your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol.

 

Interactions:

  • Azactam can result in false reports of diabetic urine testing products therefore should be preferred to get it done after the tenure of injection is over.

Products like Imipenem and Cefoxitin can negatively react with this injection.
