Albuterol Sulfate (Salbutamol) 100mcg Actuations are antiasthmatic drugs. It belongs to the category of Beta2Agonists. ProAir HFA is the international brand name of this drug. In India, it is known by the name Asthalin.
Purpose:
- Albuterol Sulfate (Salbutamol) 100mcg Actuations are used to treat and prevent shortness of breath and wheezing caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma (breathing problems).
- Asthma caused due to exercise is also treated with this drug.
- Bronchospasm is also treated with ProAir HFA mouth spray.
Mechanism:
The muscles are relaxed around the airways so that they open up, broaden, and breathing can be done easily.
Dosage:
- Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
- The recommended dosage of Asthalin for effective results is 200mg for exercise-induced bronchospasm.
- For relief of acute bronchospasm: 100-200 mg.
- For chronic therapy, the recommended dose is up to 200gm four times a day.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Albuterol Sulfate (Salbutamol) 100mcg Actuations are headache, viral infection, pharyngitis, coughing, sinusitis, dizziness, lightheadedness, and nausea.
- Serious side effects of Asthalin are immunosuppression, glaucoma, and cataracts, epistaxis, ulcerations, Candida albicans infection, impaired wound healing, Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis effects, including growth reduction.
- Rare side effects of this drug are vision problems, swelling of feet, blood-tinged mucus, increased urination, and trouble breathing.
- If any of the above-mentioned side effects persist for long, consult your doctor right away.
Precautions and measures:
- If you have had a medical history of cataracts, glaucoma, tuberculosis, herpes eye infection, ulcers, or any recent surgery, inform your doctor about the same, before starting with Albuterol Sulfate (Salbutamol) 100mcg Actuations.
- In unlikely cases, due to the prolonged use of this spray, the child’s growth might be hindered.
- Patients suffering from untreated fungal, bacteria, systemic viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex should use this drug under the strict guidance of their doctor.
- Use of excessive doses may suppress the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis function.
- Pregnant and lactating women should only use Asthalin drug if prescribed by the doctor.
- The safety of this medication has not been established in children under the age of 6 years, and hence should not be given to them without the guidance of a doctor.
- This medication is meant for single use only.
- Make sure the opening of mouth spray doesn’t come in contact with the lips.
- Prohibit or at the very least limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it will increase your dizziness and sleepiness.
- Do not get any vaccinations or immunizations done during the tenure of this drug.
Wash your hands thoroughly after the administration of the spray.
