Spironolactone 100mg is also called water-pill or potassium-sparing-diuretic comes under the Indian brand name Aldactone. It is known by the name of Aldactazide internationally. This tablet is generally used to treat heart failures, high blood pressure and low potassium levels. It has been found effective in treating patients with congestive heart diseases as well as liver and kidney disorders.

Dosage of the tablet

Spironolactone 100mg Tablets are given in different doses to people of different age groups and diseases. Most common dosage for taking it:

  1. As directed by the physician.
  2. Dosage for hypertension- 25 to 100 mg per day according to the condition. The medicine can be used as a single dose or split into two doses per day.
  3. Dosage for edema due to nephrotic syndrome and liver disease- Starting dose is 100 mg. Doctors may also prescribe you dose from 25 mg to 200 mg per day according to the requirement.
  4. Dosage for heart failure- 25 to 50 mg per day. Some might also take it on alternative days.

How does Spironolactone work in a body?

Aldactone blocks the hormone called aldosterone. This hormone is found above the kidneys called adrenal glands. Aldosterone works in the kidneys where it controls the balance of salt and water in a body.

Aldactone is sometimes prescribed for treating persistent adult acne in women. Acne can be caused due to increased sebum secretion from the sebaceous glands, which can get stimulated in women by excess androgen levels.

Who should not consume this tablet?

  1. People with Hyperkalemia.
  2. People with Addison’s disease.
  3. Pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers.
  4. Children below 18 years of age.

Who should take precautions while consuming this tablet

  1. People with kidney problems– people who have any kidney problem should consult their doctor immediately whenever they experience any side-effect. The potassium levels in the body should be monitored regularly.
  2. People with liver issues– Various side effects like confusion, poor judgment, foggy memory, abnormal body movements and shaking, trouble concentrating, etc have been noticed in people with liver problems. If you are taking this medicine and experience any side-effect, call your doctor immediately.
  3. People with heart disease- If you’re suffering from any heart disease, it is better if you have a potassium-rich diet instead of supplements. High potassium levels in the body can cause heart failure.

  1. Allergic reactions– skin rash, hives, fever, trouble breathing, swelling of your lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, etc.
  2. Electrolyte problems– mouth dryness, extreme thirst, extreme weakness and tiredness, fast heart rate and dizziness, not being able to urinate, etc.
  3. High potassium levels– muscle weakness, not being able to move your limbs, extreme tiredness, tingling or numb feeling in your hands or feet, slow heart rate
  4. Gynecomastia or breast enlargement in both males and females.

Precautions while consuming Aldactazide

  1. A person should absolutely avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
  2. Eating food high in salt is frowned upon as well. Activities like driving and sports are told to put at a halt as these will create more side effects.
