Drug Name: Dapsone 5% Gel
Details
Dapsone 5% Gel is an Acne Treatment agent. It contains dapsone, which is a sulfone, in an aqueous gel base used for topical dermatology. Aczone is the international name of this gel. In India, it is available by the name of Acnesone.
Purpose:
- It treats the symptoms of Acne Vulgaris.
- Aczone fastens the process of healing of already present pimples.
- It also decreases the severity and number of acne pimples.
- Redness and swelling due to acne are also reduced by this gel.
Mechanism:
Dapsone 5% Gel stops the growth of disease-causing organisms in the body.
Dosage:
- It is meant for external and topical use only.
- Wash your face thoroughly, pat it dry and then apply a thin layer of Acnesone on the face.
- The amount of gel taken should be the size of a pea.
- Use it for 12 weeks, once daily, before going to bed. If no effective results are visible, the treatment should be reassessed.
- An applicator, cotton bud, or earbud can be used to spread the gel all over the face.
Side effects:
- Application site pruritus
- Application site dryness
- Itching
- Redness
- Swelling of face, lips, nose, or eyes
- Rash
- Sever side effects of Dapsone 5% Gel are agranulocytosis, peripheral neuropathy, hemolytic anemia, toxic epidermal necrolysis, morbilliform and scarlatiniform reactions, erythema multiforme, erythema nodosum, urticaria, and bullous and exfoliative dermatitis.
Precautions and measures:
- If you have had a medical history of methemoglobinemia ( a certain blood disorder), or G6PD deficiency ( a certain enzyme deficiency), inform your doctor before starting with Acnesone.
- It has been established that this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor regarding the risks and benefits for the same before using it.
- Pregnant women are advised to use it only when clearly needed.
- If by any chance, the gel gets in your mouth, eyes, or nose, wash it thoroughly with plenty of water.
- This gel is meant for acne pimple treatment only, and should not be used to treat any other skin condition.
- It should be used by people over the age of 12 years.
- Always close the cap after use.
- Do not expose the tube to sunlight.
- Store it at room temperature.
- Keep it away from kids and pets.
Interactions:
- Certain medications that interact with Acnesone and produce reverse results are chloroquine, dapsone in tablet form, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
Do not use Benzoyl peroxide at the same time while you are using Dapsone 5% Gel. This might lead to a change in your skin color to yellow or orange.
