Lactulose 10gm per 15ml Oral Liquid is a Laxative Purgative agent. This also has the properties of a synthetic disaccharide and colonic acidifier. The common name of this liquid worldwide is Duphalac. However, it is also known by other names such as Kristalose and Constulose.

Purpose:

  • Kristalose is used to treat chronic constipation.
  • Treatment or prevention of complications of hepatic encephalopathy (liver disease), is also done by this liquid.
  • It may also improve the mental status.
  • Stages of hepatic precoma and coma are treated by this medication.

 

Mechanism:

Lactulose 10gm per 15ml Oral Liquid is a man-made sugar solution, which decreases the amount of ammonia in the blood. This sugar is broken down into mild acids that draw water into the colon, then in the large intestine. This helps to soften the stool.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Constulose for an adult: 2-3 tablespoons, thrice or four times a day.
  • For pediatric use: 2.5 mL – 10mL in divided dosage, daily, to produce 2-3 soft stools daily.
  • For older children and adolescents: 40-90 mL in divided dosage, daily.
  • For rectal impairment patients: 300 mL mixed with 700 mL of water, every 4-6 hours a day, every day.

 

Side effects:

  • Common side effects of Lactulose 10gm per 15ml Oral Liquid are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, cramps, sleepiness, burping, gas, bloating, dizziness among others.
  • Distension with flatulence
  • Belching
  • Loss of fluids
  • Hypokalemia
  • Hypernatremia
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Mood/mental changes
  • Stomach rumbling
  • Muscle cramps

Precautions and measures:

  • Duphalac liquid requires 6-8 hours to show effect, therefore should be taken during bedtime.
  • The recommended period for dosage is 2 weeks, for effective results.
  • Daily 25-30 g of fibre should be included in your diet.
  • 8-10 glasses of water intake.
  • Exercise is recommended at least 3 times a week.
  • Bowel issues can be worsened by holding on a stool, do not do that.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had a medical history of diabetes before starting with Lactulose 10gm per 15ml Oral Liquid.
  • If you have a low galactose diet or bowel obstruction, Duphalac is not meant for you.
  • Laxative medications during the tenure of this drug are completely prohibited.
  • The use of laxatives frequently can lead to dehydration in the body.
  • If you’re planning to get a surgery done or electrocautery, inform the surgeon of this medication that you’re using.
  • Keep a close check on your blood sugar levels.
  • During pregnancy, it should only be used if necessary.

Infants have a chance to develop hyponatremia.
