Warfarin 1mg, 2mg, 5mg Tablets are Anticoagulant agents. Warfarin sodium is the active ingredient in these tablets, which is an anticoagulant that acts by inhibiting vitamin K. Internationally it is known by the name of Coumadin. In India, it is available under the brand Warf.

Purpose:

Coumadin is used to treat certain conditions such as:

  • Prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis and its pulmonary embolism, extension.
  • Reduction in the risk of recurrent myocardial infarction, death, and thromboembolic events such as systemic embolization after myocardial infarction, or stroke.

 

Mechanism:

Warfarin 1mg, 2mg, 5mg Tablets prevent the harmful formation of blood clots. The existing blood clots are however not dissolved, but it obstructs them from causing blockages in the blood vessels and from growing larger.

 

Dosage:

  • Strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The dosage is based on your laboratory tests (such as INR), medical condition, and response to the treatment.
  • Do not increase, decrease or discontinue Warf tablets at your own ease.
  • No dosage adjustment of this drug is required for renal impairment patients.

 

Side effects:

  • Serious side effects of Warf tablets are hemorrhage, tissue necrosis, acute kidney injury, calciphylaxis, limb ischemia, systemic atheroemboli, gangrene in patients with HIT, vasculitis, pruritus, tracheal, dermatitis, flatulence, taste perversion, and alopecia.
  • Common side effects of Warfarin 1mg, 2mg, 5mg Tablets include vomiting, abdomen pain, headache, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, sleepiness, drowsiness, and chills.
  • If any of the above-mentioned effects last for longer, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

 

Precautions and measures:

  • Warf tablets make you prone to bleeding and bruising, make sure you’re cautious while shaving, cutting your nails, using any sharp object, or playing sports.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol and marijuana, as it can lead to extreme dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Maintain a certain balanced diet while you are on this treatment.
  • This tablet is absorbed by the lungs and skin and therefore is advised not to be consumed by pregnant and lactating women.
  • Include food and vegetables in your diet that are rich in vitamin K such as green tea, cabbage, sprouts, kale, etc.
  • Do not use expired medication.
  • Do not cut, split, or break the tablet.
  • Avoid any sports or activity that may result in severe injury.

 

Interactions:

  • Some medicines that might contradict with Warfarin 1mg, 2mg, 5mg Tablets are Mifepristone and Imatinib.

Ibuprofen, Celecoxib, and Naproxen may increase the risk of bleeding if taken together during the tenure of this drug.
