Details
Zoledronic Acid 5mg per 100ml solution for infusion are used in the treatment of weakened bones. This medication reduces the risk of breaking bones. It is known by the names Aclasta and Reclast all over the world.
Uses:
- It is used in the treatment of osteoporosis in menopausal women.
- It is also used to treat high calcium levels in patients who have cancer.
- Aclasta Infusion therapy is also used to treat Paget’s disease.
How does it work?
Zoledronic Acid 5mg per 100ml solution for infusion belongs to bisphosphonates. When the drug is administered it directly acts by inhibiting the osteoclasts (dissolution of the bone) which slows the breakdown of the bone. It also works by lowering the calcium levels released from the bones and thus strengthening the bone.
Dosage:
- The patient needs to read about the patient information leaflet present in the pharmacy.
- Zoledronic Acid 5mg per 100ml solution for infusion depends upon the condition of the patient that is why take it according to the doctor’s prescription.
- The recommended dose of the drug is 5mg per 100ml given as a single dose
- This drug is given through an intravenous route of administration for about 15 minutes.
- Before taking the infusion the patient needs to be hydrated fully especially elder people and renal impairment patients.
- Do not self administer Reclast until necessary.
Side effects:
- The common side effects of Aclasta infusion therapy include dizziness, headache, fever, chills and joint aches. These symptoms disappear once your body adjusts to the drug.
- Heartburn, diarrhoea, fatigue, vomiting may also be seen.
- Muscle spasm, irregular heartbeat, thigh pain, vision problems also observed.
- Difficulty in urination, coloured urine, seizures, severe musculoskeletal is the adverse effects that indicate immediate medical help.
Contraindications;
- Have a word with your doctor if you have any allergic reactions with the drug or with active constituents present in the Zoledronic Acid 5mg per 100ml solution for infusion
- It is strictly avoided in renal patients as it may cause kidney damage to patients.
- Intake of alcohol may be avoided until you are on this drug therapy as it may cause some serious side effects.
- You should avoid driving after the dose administration as it makes you feel drowsy.
- Let your doctor know if you have any jaw problems as intake of this drug causes osteonecrosis of the jaw.
- Aclasta is strictly contraindicated in pregnant women as this drug causes harmful effects to the foetus.
The studies suggest that this drug may harm infants even though there are no studies about the drug passed into the milk. Therefore consult your doctor if you are lactating mother before administration of the drug.
