Polymyxin B Sulphate 10000 units, Neomycin Sulphate 3400 units, Hydrocortisone 10 mg per 1 ml Ear Drops are used to treat ear infections. These ear drops are available internationally by the name of Otosporin. In India, you can find them by the name of Neosporin – H.
Purpose:
- It is a prescription medicine used to treat ear infections such as swimmer’s ear caused by bacteria.
- These eardrops have antibiotics Polymyxin and Neomycin which discourage the growth of bacteria.
- An anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that is hydrocortisone is also mixed in this medication which reduces the discomfort and swelling in the ear.
- It is meant for Otic use.
- Otosporin can also be used to treat superficial bacterial infections present in the auditory canal of the ear.
Dosage:
- Recommended use of Polymyxin B Sulphate 10000 units, Neomycin Sulphate 3400 units, Hydrocortisone 10 mg per 1 ml Ear Drops should be for 10 days for the most effective results.
- This medication can be used 3-4 times a day.
- Maximum four drops should be poured at once.
- For children, three drops are sufficient because of the smaller size of their ear canal.
Side effects:
- Neosporin – H can lead to skin sensitization.
- Nephrotoxicity and Ototoxicity are rare side effects of these ear drops.
- There can be itching, irritation, burning, and redness in the ear.
- Other uncategorized side effects of Polymyxin B Sulphate 10000 units, Neomycin Sulphate 3400 units, Hydrocortisone 10 mg per 1 ml Ear Drops include skin atrophy, miliaria, striae, and maceration of the skin.
Precautions and measures:
- If you’re allergic to gentamicin, prednisone, polymyxin, or dexamethasone you should inform your doctor about it clearly.
- If there’s a hole in your eardrum, herpes simplex, middle ear infection, or varicella, you should only take this medication of Polymyxin B Sulphate 10000 units, Neomycin Sulphate 3400 units, Hydrocortisone 10 mg per 1 ml Ear Drops if prescribed by your doctor.
- Safety and effectiveness among children of 2-16yrs of age is unknown.
- If the condition is not improved even slightly in 7 weeks of using Neosporin – H, you should inform your doctor.
Interactions:
Do not use these ear drops if you’ve or you’ve had external canal disorder as there might be a reverse effect of this medication.
Storage:
- These ear drops should be stored between 20°C and 25°C of temperature.
- Neosporin – H ear drops should be kept away from moisture, light, and dampness.
- Keep it away from pets and toddlers.
Do not use expired medication.
