Mupirocin 2% ointment is a topical antibiotic that is available in the form of ointment. It prevents bacteria from growing on your skin or killing the one which is already present. Mupirocin 2% ointment is also available under the brand names Bactroban and T-Bact.

 

PURPOSE:

  • Bactroban is mainly used for the treatment of impetigo, which is red sores around the mouth and nose.
  • It kills and stops multiplying the following bacteria: streptococcus and staphylococcus aureus.

 

DOSAGE:

  • For the treatment of impetigo:

Adults and children (2 months of age and above): Apply thrice a day.

Children (younger than 3 months of age): Application must be determined by the doctor.

  • As a typical dosage, if self-administered should be applied moderately three times a day for up to 10 days.
  • Mupirocin 2% ointment shouldn’t be mixed with any other preparation as there’s a risk of dilution which might result in the reduction of the effect of the ointment.

 

 

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • T-Bact doesn’t cause any serious side-effects that might result in behavioural change or change in the state of mind and body but can affect the surrounding area of an already affected site.
  • There can be increased oozing at the site of infection.
  • Swelling of the treated skin, redness, itching, dryness, and pain are common mild effects that may occur due to medication of mupirocin 2% ointment.
  • A burningṣ sensation is the most common effect of Bactroban and might persist throughout the treatment

 

PRECAUTIONS AND MEASURES:

  • Usage of Mupirocin drug is not recommended if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to it in the past. Using it again can be fatal.
  • To prevent drug transfer via touch, the treated area should be covered with a gauze dressing.
  • Mupirocin is a category B pregnancy drug; pregnant women should consult the doctor before self-administering the drug to know if its use is safe for the fetus or not.
  • This medicine is meant to be only used on the skin. Do not apply it to your nose, mouth, eyes, or pubic areas. It shouldn’t be touched on areas having scrapes, cuts, or burns. If it happens so, it should be rinsed off with water right away.
  • T-Bact should not be used with intravenous cannulae because of the potential to promote antimicrobial resistance and fungal infections.

 

STORAGE:

  • Store mupirocin topical ointment at room temperature. It should be kept between 20°C and 25°C.
  • It shouldn’t be stored in moist or damp areas, such as bathrooms.
  • Mupirocin ointment shouldn’t be kept in reach of children.

 

INTERACTIONS:

This medication has no known interactions of decreasing its effect or increasing its side-effects with other drugs.
